Confusing words

There have been a couple of posts recently on the Help Me! forum about confusing word pairs, such as economy / economics; historic / historical. Are there any pairs of words that you find confusing in English? If you have any, post them here in a comment, and I'll give an explanation or definition.

Could Clare do me a favor?
Please, correct my illustrative examples about "Historic vs Historical" on Help Me! forum.
With appreciation. Looking forward to your help.

Clare

Historic means very old or very important:
a historic building / a historic moment.

Historical is the adjective relating to history:
She's doing historical research.

could you please explain to me the different uses of the two words "as per" & " according to" ?

Clare

They mean the same thing, but "as per" is a more informal way of saying "according to".

Difference betwenn "Have to" and "Need to"

Clare

They're quite similar in meaning, but have to expresses obligation, while need to expresses necessity.

English can be so confusing. No wonder it's so tough for English language learners. Laugh a bit and sigh a bit as you check out English Can Be So Confusing.
